

Teacher Biographies
Kevin Mittleman: Electric, Acoustic, and Classical Guitar. Berklee School of Jazz. Studied one-
on-one with the Legendary John Abercrombie and Mick Goodrick. Berklee, Various Film
Scores, Touring veteran, In demand session musician.
Andrew McClymont: Bass. Taught Jazz Studies and Composition by musicians such as Jeff
Mangels, Cheihk Ndoye, Randy Mckluskey, and Ney Mello. Active Jazz and Rock bassist in the
DC and Frederick Area. Youngest Member of The School of Music family but Guaranteed to
Shred Repis on the Gnar Gnar Rad.
Glenn Flaherty: Electric, Acoustic, and Classical Guitar, Dobro. University of Maryland.
Performance credits throughout United States and Europe. Trained with Mike Auldridge. Film
and Television music credits.
Ney Mello: Electric, Acoustic, and Classical Guitar, Bass
Berklee, International performer. Top 10 recording artist, and Endorsed performer, and World
Famous Al Di Meola raves of Ney's playing. You can't get much better than that!
Patty Lai: Piano and Voice. Royal Conservatory of Music in Canada. Registered Teacher of
Royal American Conservatory. Active member of the National Guild of Piano Teachers. Her
students often participate in auditions, exams, and competitions. Studied with Jimmy Chan.
Accompanist for prof. choirs. Partner in Music School in Canada.
Mike Smirnoff: Drums. Educator at Morgan State University. After-hours rock star.
Robert Flowers: Guitar. Bass. Robert has been performing and teaching Jazz, Gospel and R&B
Guitar styles in the Washington DC area for over 20 years; music education from Berklee
College of Music, Boston, MA. , jazz improvisation studies with Jerry Bergonzi. Robert teaches
Contemporary and Classical Guitar styles along with beginning to intermediate Bass Guitar at
the School of Music in Rockville.
Heather MacArthur: Violin. Heather began playing violin at the age of four while living in
southern California. At the age of twelve, she moved to northern Virginia for three years, where
she studied with Ronda Cole and was a member of the American Youth Philharmonic under
Luis Haza. She continued her studies during high school with Anthea Kreston at the Hartt
School of Music at the University of Hartford in Connecticut. Heather is currently pursuing a
Bachelors of Music degree at the University of Maryland as a student of David Salness. She
has attended such music festivals as the Brevard Music Center and the National Orchestral
Institute. She has performed in masterclasses for Charles Castleman, Martin Chalifour, Ellen
DePasquale, Elisabeth Adkins and the Miami Quartet. Her favorite aspect of playing the violin
is being able to perform in string quartets and other chamber music groups! Heather currently
freelances and teaches privately in the DC metropolitan area.
Dane Galloway: Jazz, rock, classical Guitar and Piano, specializing on Jazz Piano. Also Electric
Bass, Mandolin, and Accordion. Frequent performer of jazz, rock, funk, folk, and hip-hop on
various instruments. Studied at the Peabody Preparatory and the National Guitar Workshop on
scholarship as well as at the Purchase College Summer Jazz institute. Has been teaching
guitar, piano, and jazz theory since age of 15. Can conduct lessons in Spanish.
John Lowery: Percussion. Formally taught Voice, Percussion, and Dance at Tulane
University. A&M Recording Artist. Grammy nominee for his solo avant Gard album in 1976.
Tosin Abasi: Guitar. Musicians Institute of Atlanta. Classical and Metal performer who even
has custom instruments build out of rare earth metals.
Hiroko Tanji: Piano. Classically trained professional. Brings all the Class and Refinement of her
talent to every session.
Patrick Tiglao: Drums: Patrick Tiglao has been playing drums for 20 years,the last 13 of which
were spent playing in various bands in the DC area,The West Coast and abroad in various
genres of music.He has studied with Bernard Purdie (Legendary Session drummer) and Gary
Chaffee (Former Berklee School of Music Percussion Director and Legendary Educator)
during the late 90's.He attended Northern Virginia Community College and The Berklee School
of Music for a couple summer sessions . Currently Patrick is playing as a member of a couple
bands in the suburban DC area. He also maintains his love of jazz and "technical" music in the
form of concerts and jam session



About our Classes, Teachers, and Approach
Approach Our Philosophy: Though Academic, We want our students to understand how music and theory is applied in the real world, to real musicians, in real situation. We will never leave our Studios wondering how to apply what you have learned.
How is this possible?: All of our teachers Have recording, and professional performance experience. Because of this, we can pass along to you the ins and outs of what it takes to feel the music. Furthermore, Our School gives lessons to teachers from other music schools! We often have teachers coming to us to learn advanced skills, and refresher classes.

Types of Lessons we offer
For Private Lessons General Instruction: Beginner to Intermediate for all styles and levels. Covers theory, technique, still sets, and repertoire building.
Master Level Classes: For the Advanced or Advancing musician. Limited time slots available. In depth analysis, musicianship, and theory and technique.
Consultations: Multi-hour spotlight sessions for musicians who have specific educational requests and who can not attend regular classes.
For Group Lessons SOM General Music Classes: Group instruction is offered Sunday mornings from 11am to 12pm. Only six students per class. Call for times and dates of classes.
City of Rockville Lessons: The School of Music is honored to be chosen by the City of Rockville to be their Educators for the Fall and Winter Rec Programs. Lessons will be offered on Saturdays from 1pm-3pm throughout the year. For more information, call the School at 301-340-4150
